I Wish You Could See What I See
Darkroom Rebellion was born from the idea of challenging expectations. Not the expectations of photography, but the expectations so many of us place on ourselves. Over the past twenty years, I’ve had the privilege of photographing people from all walks of life. One thing has remained remarkably consistent: we’re often our own harshest critics. We fixate on the lines, the scars, the weight we’ve gained, or the things we wish we could change, convinced those are the first things everyone else will notice. The truth is, they rarely are.
What I notice is the way someone laughs once they forget there’s a camera in the room. I notice quiet confidence beginning to replace nervousness. I notice strength, vulnerability, and personality. I notice the things that make someone unmistakably themselves.
I wish you could see what I see.
The Rebellion
For years we’ve been told that confidence comes after we lose the weight, erase the wrinkles, hide the scars, or become a different version of ourselves.
I don’t believe that’s true.
Darkroom Rebellion is a quiet rebellion against the idea that you have to be perfect before you’re worthy of being seen. It’s a reminder that the qualities you worry about most are rarely what define you, and that confidence isn’t reserved for some future version of yourself.
It’s something you deserve to experience now.
